Introduction 2014 - After time
In the grand finale of a film on the last day of the festival we can see a group of youngsters a few hours after a bomb alarm, on a lot beside an evacuated supermarket. They are watching the summer sunset, sitting in the dusty sand, one of them is taking a photo of the others with a mobile phone – and apparently nothing is happening. However we have the impression that those we can see have fallen headlong into the depth of the events by actually getting out of the story... This time after time is not simply a time for insight but time for astonishment; perhaps we could even say a time for meditation, as well.
I think the grand finale of Andrei Tănase’s film can be regarded as the emblematic summary of Arcus Temporum of 2014; this year music, theatre, installations and films take us along to this dusty and yet infinitely silent lot – and weave the experiences of our own lives: sounds and pictures, time and timelessness, speech and speechlessness, gestures and proposals into one manifold experience.
And some facts: the three-year mandate of Bent Sørensen musical director is completed, his position will be taken over by Beat Furrer this year. The conceptions of the new musical director can be perceived in the compilation of the programme, and in the delicate changes of emphasis. We are able to greet old acquaintances among the splendid performers (like the Norwegian Cikada Ensemble or the Klangforum Wien), or such new performers – like Shirin Asgari, a singer of Persian origin, or Holger Falk and Rados Ferenc –, whose appearance in Pannonhalma fill us with joy and excitement.
A special conception is being prepared this year at one concert venue for the “alteration” of the gymnasium of the grammar school. After the concert on the first night the space will continue to be under construction this year as well, as it will be converted into an independent sight and sound installation and will wait for us to return to the sounding we helped to form.
In the framework of our night jazz-programme the Juhász Gábor–Lukács Miklós–Szalai Péter trio will present their new album Making a Change, which is connected to Pannonhalma, and the next day we can hear Juhász Gábor’s Winterreise-cycle. This latter one was actually composed for this occasion.
